Pastors & Staff

Rev. Paul Tangonan

Head Pastor

I am a native of Southern California.  I grew up in the Imperial Valley where my parents were very busy working in the produce industry.   Connie is a native of Akron, Ohio, moved to San Francisco and then to Maui, where she completed her career in education as a speech and language pathologist in the public schools.

Having literally grown up in the United Methodist Church, I am one of ten children and am grateful to my parents, seven sisters and two younger brothers who experienced spiritual guidance from my parents, friends and our pastors who were a major part of my life in helping me learn about Christ and the saving grace Christ provides to each and everyone of us.

I have always tried to make my interpretation of Scripture and the life of Christ a style that is known as Practical Divinity, meaning, to find ways to incorporate our faith so it becomes a part of our every day living through our words and actions, representative of the spirit of Christ in our lives.  This is a theology I have practiced in my 38 year’s of appointment ministry in the local church.

After graduating from high school, I began my formal education at Chapman College in Orange, California studying music.  When I began to experience the call to the Ordained Ministry, I transferred to Willamette University in Salem, Oregon and graduated in 1980 with a degree in the Social Sciences.

My journey into the ministry began after my first year in college, where I was invited to be a staff member aboard Chapman College’s World Campus Afloat program, where I taught music and directed the Sunday chapel choir.

After my second year in college, I was selected to represent the Cal-Pac Annual Conference as one of ten college student who spent the summer of 1976 studying Liberation Theology in the countries of Panama, Peru and Bolivia.  This was a theology and interpretation of the Gospels that gave hope and empowerment to people who were experiencing severe challenges in their lives in South America brought about by the ruling militaristic governments in those countries.

My seminary education has taken me to Boston University School of Theology, Harvard Divinity and then to the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado where I graduated with a Master of Divinity in 1985.  Post Graduate studies have taken me to Israel’s Center for Biblical Studies and then to the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and to Italy and the Vatican for Holocaust and Reformation studies.

My interests include vegetable gardening, song writing, sailing, traveling, baking a variety of breads, and spending time with our furry pet family, Leilani, Callie and Chico.  The joy in our lives are our two sons, Alex and Zachary.  Alex practices real estate law in Menlo Park, Ca and Zachary provides strength and support for families as a registered nurse in Obstetrics and Labor and Delivery at Maui Memorial Hospital on the island of Maui.

Connie and I are delighted to have been appointed to serve San Fernando First United Methodist Church and look forward to sharing and growing with you in the faith.

Blessings and Aloha,

Pastor Paul and Connie
